Shin-hotaka Ropeway is the only 2-story gondola in Japan which you can enjoy the four seasons of the Northern Alps. In particular, the fall foliage can be seen about one month from late September thanks to the altitude difference. I will also introduce the attract points of the ropeway!

Let's head to the observation deck

"Shin-hotaka Ropeway" opened in 1970 and it is a popular tourist spot visited by more than 340,000 tourists a year.
There are two ropeways and the first one is the section from "Shin-hotaka Onsen Station" to "Nabedaira Kogen Station".
With just a short walk from "Nabedaira Kogen Station", there is "Shirakabadaira Station" which connects with "Nishihotakaguchi Station" by the second ropeway. You can ride the two-story ropeway in the second section.
The view from the observatory at the terminal "Nishihotakaguchi Station" is a large panorama that was listed as a two-star in a world-famous travel guidebook!

Let's buy a ticket to go to the observatory.

The regular round trip ticket for the first and second ropeway is JPY 2,900 yen(tax included), but the recommended one is a "Sawayaka Pack" (JPY 3,900 yen included tax). This is a set of hot spring bathing fee at "Kamitakanoyu" in front of "Shirakabadaira Station" (JPY 600) and JPY 1,500 ticket that can be used for eating and drinking and shopping. If you want to try to take a hot spring, this is really good deal!
Get on the first ropeway and depart!
Riding time is about 4 minutes. Although the height difference is 188m, the slope is about 38 degrees, so you can see the quick change of the sceneries!

Change the ropeway at middle station

Arrived at the middle station, "Nabedaira-Kogen Station", and change the ropeway. You can see the 2-story second ropeway on the trees behind.
To get on that, go to the next "Shirakabadaira Station". The first ropeway departs at 00 and 30 minutes every hour, and the second ropeway departs at 15 and 45 minutes every hour, so there is plenty of time for a transfer even if you take a rest break.

"Whether you should ride on the first floor or the second floor", but it seems that there is not much difference between the first floor and the second floor in terms of seeing distant views. But the second floor is still more popular. Basically the first 50 people on the second floor and the next 70 people on the first floor, so when there are many customers such as autumn leaves, they will be sorted in order.

▲ The capacity of the second ropeway is 121 people. Ride time is about 7 minutes. Height difference is 845m

The ride feels more like a walk in the air than expected, and every time you cross the tower on the way, it shakes greatly. It is exciting as a theme park attraction. It is impressive to see the mountains that seemed so far that you would not be able to see them without climbing, as the ropeway climbs up the mountains.

Finally arrive! Commemorative photo at the observatory

Finally, arrived at Nishihotakaguchi Station (also known as Sancho Station) at an altitude of 2,156m.
In front of I was the white mountains of the Northern Alps.
The Shin-hotaka Ropeway is located in the northern part of Gifu prefecture, at the prefectural border with Toyama and Nagano prefectures. There are many mountains about 3,000 meters, including the third highest mountain in Japan, Oku-Hotaka-dake (3,190m), the fifth tallest Yariga-take (3,180m), Karasawatake (3,110m) and Kita-Hotakadake (3,106 meters).
The most important thing to do at the observatory is to take a commemorative photo! A staff member wearing orange clothes and a camera is shooting tourists at a corner of the observatory.
They are volunteer staff and sell the photos they took (JPY 1,200), but they also provide a service that allows you to take pictures with the camera you brought.

What are the most popular souvenirs at the summit station?

After the commemorative photo shoot, go to the shop on the third floor of the summit station. Let's go find a product that is exclusive to here! If you have purchased the "Refreshing Pack", there is a ticket for 1,500 yen, and you can use it in the shop (if something costs more than that, you will pay the difference). Recommended is a product that was made under the concept of "connecting" which is Sarubobo, a mascot of Takayama, with a wire written Shin-hotaka Ropeway" attached to the chest.

Enjoy the open-air bath at the middle station "Shirakabadaira Station"

Enjoy the summit station and board the ropeway again.
Immediately after arriving at "Shirakabadaira Station", you will find "Alps bakery"!
▲ The most popular dish is 100% pure butter croissant (JPY 180). Limited chestnut croissant (JPY 260) is also available during the autumn leaves season!

Head to the natural hot spring open-air bath "Kami-Takara no-yu" in the visitor center in front of "Shirakabadaira Station".
▲ There is a free footbath when you look at the side, but if you buy a "fresh pack"ticket, you can enter the open-air bath

There is an entrance to the open-air bath in one corner of the visitor center. As you go through the curtain, there are dressing rooms for men and women, and there are coin lockers and valuables boxes.
If you pay an extra fee, you can purchase a face towel for JPY 200 and a bath towel for 400 yen (all including tax).

Special event

This time was Winter Hotaka, but various events are held throughout the year. A particularly popular event is the "Sunset Ropeway," which you can watch the sunset from the ropeway. It is held from mid-October to mid-November, so you may be able to see beautiful sunset if the weather is good!

Spend a relaxing time at Okuhida Onsen
If you want to stay, recommended is Okuhida Onsenkyo in front of the Shin-hotaka Ropeway. The five hot springs that abound at the foot of the Northern Alps: Hirayu, Fukuchi, Shin-hirayu, Tochio, and Shin-hotaka are abundant hot springs, and are called Okuhida Onsenkyo, where you can enjoy a bath while looking at majestic mountains. It is one of the best hot spring resorts in Gifu prefecture. From there, you can visit the Kamikochi, which is rich in nature, and Takayama City, which is famous for its old townscape.
