The official name is "Renge-Ouin" and it was originally the Imperial Villa of a retired Emperor Shirakawa after he ruled the country in the late Heian era. The main temple (designated as a national treasure), which faces east and extends north and south, is now called "Sanju-sangen-do" because it has 33 pillars (Sanjyu-san = 33). There are a total of 1001 Senju Kannon statues in the hall together with the central statue of Chuson Kannon.

1. What kind of temple is Sanju-sangen-do? Let's see the history

Originally there was the Hoju-ji Temple built by the retired Emperor Goshirakawa as a detached palace. Kiyomori Taira built the Renge Ouin in 1164 as the central Buddhist temple of Kannon worship at the wish of the retired Emperor. It was burned down in a fire in 1249, but the current main hall was rebuilt by Emperor Gosaga in 1266. The main hall, which has 33 spaces between the columns of the inner hall, is about 125 meters north-south and 22 meters east-west. By the way, the space between pillars is 35 when viewed from the outside. Received the strong power of the authorities during each era, restoration had been performed. It was Yoshinori Ashikaga who repaired the Chuson and Thousand Buddha's.
Hideyoshi Toyotomi, who noticed that it was a key point of transportation in the Momoyama era, built Daibutsuden Hoko-ji Temple to the north of Sanju-sangen-do. Sanju-sangen-do was included in the precincts of Hoko-ji Temple and built an earthen wall, which is still designated as an important cultural property. It is currently managed by the Myoho-in Monzeki.

▶ Spectacle 1001 Buddha statues

When you enter the main hall, there is a main statue of "Sitting Senjyu Kannon" (a national treasure) in the center and a thousand Senjyu Kannon are lined up on both side (10 steps, 50 columns each side). The appearance of 1001 Senju Kannon statues in total is just incredible.
However, why there are 1000 statues in the hall? It was said that the world had entered the "end-of-life" world since about 1000 years. The end-of-life is the time when Buddha's teachings are not well-known and people are not enlightened.
So, the retired Emperor Shirakawa, who was deeply worshiping Buddhism, thought.
"If I build 1000 statues of Senju Kannon, wouldn't Senju Kannon come to save people?"
By the way, the thousand hands of the Senju Kannon mean more innumerable hands than the thousand hands.
Of the 1,000 statues, 124 are statues of the Heian period (the founding period), and others are made during the Kamakura period. About 500 of them have the author's name including Keiha schools such as Unkei and Kaikei. "Daiichi-son", "Sonshuku-son", "Hogan-son", "Tomoyuki-son" ... Each of the 1001 has a name. The work style is the same, but the faces differ one by one, and it is said that if you look carefully, you can meet the "Senju Kannon statue with the face of the person you want to meet again."

▶ The sitting Senju Kanon in the center

The statue of Chuson Kannon sitting in the center of the hall was designated as a national treasure in 1951. There are 40 actual hands except for the central hand. This is thought to have 25 salvation works per hand, and 40 × 25 = 1000 (infinity) salvation works. In addition, each hand has a different belonging (jibutsu), and each expresses the work of Kannon's salvation. It is the last work of Tankei at 82 years old.

▶ Fujin (wind god) and Raijin (Thunder god) and 28 members

On both sides of the hall, there is a statue of the Fujin and Raijin, which was made by the Keiha School during the Kamakura period. It is said that this Fujin and Raijin is the oldest thing in Japan and that it is a model of the Fujin and Raijin figure on folding screen at Kennin-ji Temple.
